I hope this will be fun for all of you, and I almost guarantee it will be comical, because judging at my failed attempts at Spanish, Greek should be even better... Or would that be worse? Anyways, this should be fun.
Countdown: 11 Weeks, 6 Days
In my attempt to learn Greek, I have turned to Pinterest. It's perfect, all of the ideas I am finding are really elementary. And I am setting some really basic goals, so I think it might help. What is has done is gotten me really excited for Greece!
As many of you know I have a family wedding to attend on the island of Santorini, Greece this spring. Unfortunately I know two Greek words, and those words are names of the two types of Greek food I love! I think I need to know a little bit more than just pastitsio and avaglemono. (Which are basically Greek lasagna and lemon, chicken and rice soup). So I am making it my goal to know how to have (very) small talk in Greek, by the end of the semester. To make this "observable and measurable," as us student teachers are trained so well to do, I will keep this blog posted with my progress, and I will set the words and phrases I want to know out ahead of time. Then I will differentiate if necessary.
I hope this will be fun for all of you, and I almost guarantee it will be comical, because judging at my failed attempts at Spanish, Greek should be even better... Or would that be worse? Anyways, this should be fun. Countdown: 11 Weeks, 6 Days

You made me laugh when you said that the only Greek words you know are the words for food! I don't blame you, Greek food is heavenly, haha. Anyways, I think this is a great goal for you especially considering that you have a due date (the wedding) and because it's something you know you will use. Good luck, and I am looking forward to hearing about your progress! I thought about learning Arabic but abandoned the idea because I didn't think I could do it. I'd love to hear about your strategies; maybe I will copy them someday.

I never knew I loved Greek food until a couple years ago, now I have been making up for all of the lost time! Now I'm thinking maybe I should have decided to learn how to cook a leg of lamb... :) I hope to keep you entertained!

What a great goal, and you will be able to put it to a real test. Santorini is one of my favorite places. I was there in college while I was living in Spain. It is so beautiful. What a great place to have a wedding!

I cannot wait to go! Greece was at the top of my list of places to visit, but I didn't think it was going to happen for a long time. Thanks to the wedding, it's happening when I'm young! I really think it's going to be great. Hopefully I will be able to put my sad Greek language skills to the test!

For some reason, this totally reminds me of Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants when Lena goes to Greece for the summer and stays with her family there and doesn't know any of the language, but everyone there knows English so she's okay and I'm not too sure where this rant is going and also this is a very long run-on sentence but in conclusion: THIS IS AWESOME AND I'M SO JEALOUS THAT YOU'RE GOING TO GREECE! The end.

I'm going to be there with a family that does know Greek, and basically everyone in the world speaks English... I don't think I'll struggle if I don't know the language. But it's been fun trying so far. Jessica and I have been using google translate to leave Greek stickies on each other's collab desks at school :).

Kimmy McKenzieI am visiting Greece in May for a family wedding. I know that I like Pastitsio and Avaglemono... But that's not going to get me directions to the nearest restroom... So I am taking it upon myself to learn some Greek phrases! I hope you find my journey fun and comical, because I certainly do. Archives
