Quote: “Our ability to produce, consume, and distribute knowledge in an unlimited, unfiltered, and immediate way is the primary reason for the changes we see today” (51).
Explanation: The process of learning has changed, gotten so much shorter/more minimal in some aspects.
Question: How can we use this speed/efficiency to our benefit as teachers?
Connection: This can advance the level of thought/rigor in assignments.
Aha!: This eliminates some of the research process as we know it. Instant information can lead to much deeper thinking.
Chapter 5: The Personal with Collective
Quote: “Throughout life, people engage in a process of continuous learning about things in which they have a personal investment” (57).
Explain: People want to do what they like/want…
Question: How do we get students to invest in what we are learning?
Connection: We need to get students pumped on the the curriculum. We need to relate it to them, their interests.
Aha!: Students are people too. They don’t want to do things they do not want to do obviously.
Chapter 6: We Know More than We can Say
Quote: “ Instead, the new culture of learning is about the tension develops when students with an interest or passion that they want to explore are faced with a set of constraints that allow them to act only within given boundaries” (81).
Explain: He is saying that there are students who are willing and ready to learn, but that they may not want to do so the way the teacher or instructor wants them to learn.
Question: How do we find a middle ground between students’ interests and teacher’s limitations.
Connection:We aren't ALWAYS going to be able to give the students exactly what they want, but we as educators need to make sure we keep their interests and motivations in mind when planning instruction.
Aha!: Interest and relevance creates motivation which leads to engagement.
